FAQ

Straight answers.

Everything clients ask most about crochet locs, pricing, deposits and where Hooked & LOK'D works.

What is the crochet method for dreadlocks?+

The crochet method uses a small crochet hook to pull loose hair into the loc and tighten it from the inside out. It creates tight, mature-looking locs without wax, chemicals or interlocking, and it works for starting new locs, maintaining existing ones and repairing damage.

How does crochet dreadlock maintenance work?+

During maintenance, new growth at the roots and loose hair along the loc are crocheted back in, tightening each loc and cleaning up its outline. The result is neat roots, tighter locs and a well-kept overall look.

How often should crochet dreadlocks be maintained?+

Most clients book maintenance about every three months, which matches a typical cycle of new growth. If you go significantly longer, an annual/major maintenance session is the better fit.

Can loose hair be crocheted back into dreadlocks?+

Yes. Incorporating loose hair is one of the main things crochet maintenance does — loose strands are pulled back into the loc with the hook so nothing is left frizzy or detached.

Can crochet be used to start dreadlocks?+

Yes. New crochet loc installation creates dreadlocks from your existing natural hair using only the crochet method — no wax, no chemicals. New installations start at $350.

Can crochet repair damaged dreadlocks?+

In many cases, yes. Thinning spots, breakage and unraveling can often be rebuilt with crochet repair, which is priced per loc ($15 per loc, $75 minimum). Send photos first so we can confirm what's repairable.

Can dreadlock extensions be installed using crochet?+

Yes. Extensions are installed and integrated with the crochet method so they blend with your natural hair. Installation starts at $450 plus the cost of hair/extensions, and a photo assessment is required before final pricing.

How long does crochet dreadlock maintenance take?+

It depends on loc count, length and how much new growth you have. Your estimated appointment time is confirmed when you book — send photos for the most accurate estimate.

Does crochet dreadlock maintenance use wax?+

No. Hooked & LOK'D uses the crochet method only — no wax, no palm rolling products, no chemicals.

What should I do before my appointment?+

Arrive with clean, fully dry, product-free hair unless you've been told otherwise. Specific prep instructions are confirmed when you book.

How much does crochet dreadlock maintenance cost?+

3-month crochet maintenance starts at $175, and annual/major maintenance starts at $275. Final pricing depends on loc count, length, density, new growth, loose hair and overall condition.

How much does it cost to start crochet dreadlocks?+

New crochet loc installation starts at $350 with a $100 booking deposit. Final pricing depends on hair length, density, number of locs, desired loc size and complexity.

How much do dreadlock extensions cost?+

Extension installation starts at $450 plus the cost of the hair/extensions themselves. Final pricing requires a photo assessment because it depends on the number of extensions, length, material and complexity.

Do you work on existing dreadlocks?+

Yes — maintenance, major maintenance, repair and extension integration are all done on existing dreadlocks, regardless of how they were originally started.

Can I send photos before booking?+

Yes, and it's encouraged. The free photo consultation lets you send 2–4 photos so we can recommend the right service and give you an approximate price range before you commit.
